The Archives, Manuscripts & Rare Books Department is the official repository for institutional memory of Southern University and A&M College, including records pertaining to academic programs and departments, College administration, alumni activities, and student life that have enduring historical, administrative, or community significance. The Archives was started in 1961 by then, the retired ‘Dean’ of the University, John Brother Cade. After Cade retired from active duty of the university his influence as the Dean remained on the campus by establishing the Archives Department (Archives, Manuscripts & Rare Books Department) on the campus of Southern University where he served as Director.
